GUEST PRESENTER AT TCAF

The Toronto Comic Arts Festival (TCAF) has invited me to participate in their Word Balloon Academy Professional Clinic on Friday May 13th at the Bloor Yorkville Marriott. I will be available to answer questions about injury prevention and good drawing habits and will have copies of my mini comics (No) Pain! and First Aid for Drawing Injuries for sale. I will also present a self care workshop on back pain prevention on Saturday May 14th in the early afternoon, AND will be reading from some of my less educational comics for a Carousel Slide Show on Sunday the 15th late afternoon, details TBA May 11ish. NO BACK PAIN! ANOTHER GUIDE TO INJURY PREVENTION FOR CARTOONISTS

Yes, there is a third volume of injury prevention and self care in the works! No Back Pain! Another Guide to Injury Prevention for Cartoonists focuses on... you guessed it - back pain! This mini comic explains the anatomy behind three common causes of back pain: muscle spasm, muscle tear, and disk herniation. It also gives some guidelines for self care and injury prevention, and presents breathing and conditioning exercises for relaxing and strengthening the core muscles of the trunk. (As usual, if you use this book instead of medical advice you are out of your mind.) No Back Pain! is still in-progress but I will have excerpted draft copies for preview at TCAF.

Visualizing and Drawing Anatomy Workshop at the New York Academy of Medicine

I am very excited to announce that I am partnering with the New York Academy of Medicine to offer an anatomy for artists four week workshop on Monday evenings June 6, 13, 20, and 27. As per usual I will be drawing the musculoskeletal system onto live models, but the most exciting part is that each class starts with an exploration of body parts and other systems in the Academy’s Drs. Barry and Bobbi Coller Rare Book Reading Room! For registration and  information you can visit the NYAM events page. And, as stated above, I will be posting an in-depth description and sneak peak at some of the images we will be working with at NYAM on May 17th.

VESALIUS 500

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, VESALIUS!
Who was Vesalius? One of the (many) greatest anatomists who ever lived. Even if you "don't know anything" about the history of medicine or anatomical study, you've either seen reproductions of his anatomical illustrations or you've seen the illustrations of others who were heavily influenced by him or directly ripping him off (like me!)

This year celebrates his 500th birthday. Come celebrate with a day of art-academic-nerd flavored discovery.

Artist Riva Lehrer is the guest curator.

My presentation, Visualizing Anatomy on a Live Model, is at 11 AM (on the third floor). I'll use the anatomical illustrations of Vesalius and other early anatomists and draw on a live model (dancer Tyner Dumortier), as we look at the body with the double vision of the anatomist. Part live-drawing performance, part slide show/lecture, part conversation, we will explore the (kin)esthetic relationships of our anatomy.

ANOTHER CAROUSEL PERFORMANCE!

IT'S CAROUSEL SEASON

What's Carousel? It's the comics/cartoon/sequential art slide show produced by the multitalented R. Sikoryak. With each show, Bob (R.) invites a mix of artists to present and read their work. Some of the work has musical accompaniment, some artists invite friends to do voices with them, sometimes there is live drawing. It's never the same group of people and always a great show!

Back in the old days, Carousel was actually performed with slide projectors or various types of overhead projectors using slides, filmstrips, transparencies, or what-have-yous. Now it's typically done with some kind of presentation hard- and software.

Last week, I premiered the performance of my newest mini Pictorial Anatomy of 007 at the Asbury Park Comicon. If you didn't make it to New Jersey, don't worry! You can catch me in a Carousel performance as a part of the Remix Festival:

A DESCRIPTION OF THE FESTIVAL

The RE/Mixed Media Festival is a celebration of collaborative art-making and creative appropriation. It’s the artists’ contribution to the ongoing conversation about remixing, mashups, copyright law, fair use, and the freedom of artists to access their culture in order to add to and build upon it. RE/Mixed Media Festival IV will be held on April 26-27, 2014 at The New School, in cooperation with the School of Media Studies, and Parsons The New School for Design; and at CultureHub, in NYC's East Village.

The Pictorial Anatomy of 007 was one of my best sellers at Asbury Park.  How do you get your mitts on a copy? You can purchase them from me at the Carousel show, and I will try to get them offered online within the next week or so.

I used to be a choreographer. Did you know that? Had a dance company, made some dance films, and worked with lots of extremely talented people. One of those talented people, James Urbaniak, asked me to choreograph a music video he was directing for Drazy Hoops. Love James, love Drazy. Timing was right. Couldn't refuse.

Come on down to the Bathesda North Marriot Hotel and Conference Center for the SMALL PRESS EXPO! SPX is a controlled explosion of comics and talent! 

On Saturday September 14 at 5:30 pm I will be performing in another R. Sikoryak produced Carousel Slide Show, with other distinguished guests Lisa Hanawalt, Sam Henderson, Michael Kupperman, Anders Nilsen, Leslie Stein.

Other times you can find me on Saturday and Sunday wandering the aisles looking at incredible work, attending excellent panels, or manning the Center for Cartoon Studies table as alumna faculty. Stop by, say "Hi!" I will be selling my minis, too.

I will be teaching a nine class ANATOMY FOR DANCERS series at the

Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance.

We will meet Thursdays, Sept. 19 - November 14 from 12:15 pm - 1:45 pm. The series covers basics of musculoskeletal tissue structure (we dissect chicken legs on the first day), basic principles of exercise and how to relate them to dance training, and basic musculoskeletal anatomy from the feet to the shoulder girdle. The Graham School will allow you to sign up for anatomy class only, if you request it. (It's usually a part of their extended programs.) Contact me for details if you're interested.

ANATOMY KITCHEN
Created in collaboration with Jeremy Laverdure and David (Squid) Quinn. Presented at Dixon Place Theater as part of BRINK dance/performance series, curated by Kimberly Brandt. January 26-27, 2011, in New York City.


With Anatomy Kitchen I wanted to give the audience the experience of connecting to their own anatomical structures and tissues specifically, and translate that self-awareness into an agent through which to blur the distinction between self and animal. From my perspective, the most direct method for engaging in the melding of human/self and animal/other is through the manipulation of meat/food and human muscle. The performance should encompass the anatomization of animal/meat as food, and conceptual assemblage of human as meat, and therefore as food. I came to this realization one night as I was enjoying a particularly memorable pork shank. Jeremy, Squid and I designed a cooking show incorporating elements of massage, food, cooking, anatomy, and butchery.

skirt steak (thoracic diaphragm),and bacon (abdominal obliques and transversus abdominis).
